Dhanis of Morni ‘Ilaqa’
During the days of the British rule, the ‘Ilaqa of Morni’ formed a jagir of the Mir of Morni for which he paid revenue to the British government as was assessed and periodically revised by the British land revenue authorities. The entire revenue demand for the entire Morni ilaqa was fixed at Rs. 8726 after the Second Revised Settlement of Ambala District (1915-20). The Mir in turn, divided his ilaqa into 14 Bhojs that in turn consisted of 172 dhanis (hamlets). The headman of each dhani collected the revenue for his dhani and handed over the collection to the ‘karkun’ appointed by the Mir for his bhoj, after deducting 2% of the amount as incentive. The ‘karkuns’ in turn deposited the collection from the bhoj in the tehsil, after deducting 5% of the amount as incentive.
With the introduction of the Panchayati raj, the dhanis falling in the Morni Development Block (the area of the block overlapping roughly with the Morni ilaqa under the Mirs) were divided between ‘Panchayats’ . The area of the new panchayats was overlapping with that of the corresponding bhojs in most cases. In the case of some of the larger bhojs, however, more than one panchayat was included under a single bhoj. The smallest Bhoj, Darara by contrast, itself fell within a larger Panchayat area. Today, the 286 dhanis* of the Morni block are divided between 20 village Panchayats.

* The list of dhanis is not exhaustive and has been taken from the data prepared under MNREGA. All the major hamlets have, however, been included. The Panchkula District Administration website lists 369 dhanis under the 20 panchayats of Morni Development Block (includes all the 286 under MNREGA with slight variations in the way the names are spelt). The list as per records of election department differs from both the above lists!
Apart from the aforesaid dhanis that fall under the jurisdiction of the Morni Development Block there are also dhanis and panchayats that fall in the area of Morni foothills and are included in the Barwala, Raipurrani and Pinjore Development blocks. Prominent among these are the following:-
